The grand buildings and mills of Scotland especially Glasgow and Edinburgh are there because of wealth grown from free African labour and the profits of chattel slavery. My complex family history is connected, most people's are at some point, in some way - yours too probably.
lyrics
All along your walls and your stairways grand
There's writ the pain o my family
The blood o the ancestors streaked through sand,
Of forerunners no just my ain
And there's no denying the beauty in these halls
(sic an honesty wouldnae remove)
But we'll look at the darkness it stands upon
The weight that we all helped to move
And I have been told I have no land
or rather I have it all
I've been saved by liberators from falling down
By being made to crawl
My kin have seen truths
And though you cut my tongue to try to stop me to sing
Others will hold the tune
You'll hear your downfall ring
And I hear a sound
There's a drumming in the air
The building of something for someone
Is built out of hope or of fear
The walls of my heart, tempered by history
As strong and as fragile as shell
Echoes collective memory
Pins me to the floor and I'm watching us
Onto the boats
We're sailing where we do not know
And there is a line
Will take us where it will
And we will try
For its all that we can ever do
The margin is fine
But we walk it still
Mother, in chains, I miss my mother
The one who would tell me when everything isnae alright
But who would sing me to sleep
While uncertainty cuts through the night
Pray for the fathers 'fore violence cuts them from sight
Onto the boats
We're sailing where we do not know
And there is a line
Will take us where it will
And we will try
For its all that we can ever do
The margin is fine
But we walk it still
You hear your downfall ring
